  • Quote of the Year

    If not of the decade.

It seems that U. S. Senator Ted Coburn of Oklahoma, a Bible quoter of the first magnitude and a family practice M.D., gives lectures to congressional interns and staffers about sexually transmitted diseases.  He gave one yesterday and showed his usual graphic slides to illustrate what he had to say.

Coburn always offers to see people in private after the lecture, and his staff say 10 or so people always take him up on it and many more ask follow-up questions after his lectures. No doubt at the very least he’s filling in basic gaps in knowledge.

“You keep mentioning the word ‘monogamy’,” a staffer named Roland Foster recalls one young woman asking after a lecture. “What is that?”

“That’s when you have sex with only one partner,” Coburn responded.

    “You mean at a time?”

When I told this to Beth a few minutes ago, she asked, “Is that really true?”

“Well, the Washington Post thinks it is,” I said, and we both laughed heartily.

The ironic implications of this are so deep and widespread that I don’t know where to begin.  So I won’t.  I’ll just leave it with you as the quote of the day, week, month, year, or decade.  You decide.
